When you are to report about something, let it be in writing or orally, you cannot avoid using the passive form. You definitely have to use it correctly or else your message will not come through. There are rules to follow. Hence, you might as well learn and master this particular lesson (the second from 12 - which deals with the Simple Past Tense Form) in the 'Passive Voice'.
